Vine Snake Strike

A Vine Snake opens its mouth to strike in the jungles of western Ecuador. I was working in a banana plantation when I found this snake, and discovered in the course of shooting it that if I got just the right distance away it would hold its mouth open and wait, and would strike only if I moved too close. Unfortunately the right distance was pretty narrow, and I was bitten more than once before it was over. This image won 2nd Place in the Color section of the Best of College Photography Competition in 2004.
